Best AI Voice Recorder Apps in 2026 — No Pendant Needed
Competitor features come from each app's own App Store or Google Play listing, or the maker's help pages, read on 25 October 2026. We make BlackBox. BlackBox transcribes and labels speakers on-device; it does not write AI summaries, and this page says so wherever it matters.

"AI voice recorder" went from almost nothing to one of the fastest-rising recorder searches in the last year, mostly on the back of pendant and card-sized gadgets. But you don't need a gadget to get the AI part. Most of it is software, and several apps already do it on the phone in your pocket.
The catch is that "AI" covers very different features, and some of them send your audio to a server. This guide separates them and says plainly what each app does, using each app's own listing. We make BlackBox, so read our section with that in mind.
First: what "AI" means in a voice recorder
| Feature | What it does | Where it usually runs |
|---|---|---|
| Transcription | Turns speech into searchable text | On-device or cloud |
| Speaker labels | Marks who said what | On-device or cloud |
| Summaries, action items, chat | Writes a recap or answers questions about the recording | Almost always cloud |
If you want summaries, you are almost always choosing a cloud service. If transcription and speaker labels are enough, you can keep everything on your phone.
The short version
- BlackBox — on-device transcription and speaker labels, background and scheduled recording, iPhone and Android. No AI summaries.
- Google Recorder — transcribes, labels and can summarise; Pixel phones only.
- Apple Voice Memos — transcribes on iPhone 12 and later; summaries through Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones.
- Otter — cloud transcription, summaries, chat and action items; account required.
- Granola — cloud meeting notes with summaries and chat, on iPhone and Mac.
- Plaud — the app for Plaud's recorder devices, with cloud summaries and an agent.
BlackBox — the AI that stays on your phone
We make BlackBox. Its AI is deliberately narrow: on-device transcription with timestamps and speaker labels. That's it. No summaries, no chat, no action items. In exchange, nothing is uploaded and there's no account.
What it does well:
- Records without you remembering to. All day in the background, or on separate weekday and weekend schedules, with the screen off.
- Turns long audio into searchable text. Each hour is its own file on a daily timeline, transcribed on the phone, so you can find a sentence from Tuesday afternoon.
- Labels speakers so meeting and interview transcripts are readable.
- Keeps everything local, behind Face ID, fingerprint or a passcode, with export to a folder you choose.
What it doesn't do: summaries, live captions while you speak, or recording the phone-call line (it records the room around the phone). If you want a recap, you can paste a transcript into an assistant you choose; see summarising transcripts with AI.
Best for: people who want AI search over their own recordings without handing those recordings to anyone.
Google Recorder — best on a Pixel
Google's listing says Recorder "automatically transcribes and labels what you record so that you can easily find the parts that matter", and that you can "even summarize". It's a Pixel app; Google's help pages put speaker labels on Pixel 6 and later.
Pick it if you own a Pixel and record clips or meetings you start yourself. Skip it if you use an iPhone or another Android brand. Details in BlackBox vs Google Recorder.
Apple Voice Memos — the iPhone default, with Apple Intelligence
Apple's guide says Voice Memos transcribes while you record or after, on iPhone 12 or later, in English and nine other languages, and that with Apple Intelligence you can summarise transcripts using Writing Tools on supported iPhones.
Pick it if you're on a recent iPhone and record short things. Skip it if you need all-day or scheduled recording, Android, or speaker labels (Apple's Voice Memos guide doesn't mention them).
Otter — cloud AI for meetings
Otter's listing describes live transcription in English, Spanish and French, speaker labels, summaries, an AI chat and action items, plus automated notes for Zoom, Meet and Teams. It needs an account, and the listing says transcription needs an internet connection.
Pick it if your team wants shared, summarised notes. Skip it if recordings must stay off other people's servers. See BlackBox vs Otter.
Granola — AI notes for back-to-back meetings
Granola's iPhone listing describes transcribing meetings and outbound phone calls, starting from the Lock Screen, and producing a shareable summary with "highlights, decisions, and action items", plus a chat over your notes. It syncs with Google Calendar and works across iPhone and Mac.
Pick it if you live in meetings and want a written recap. Skip it if you want raw audio kept on your phone. More in Granola alternatives.
Plaud — the app for a recorder device
Plaud's app is built around Plaud's own recorders. Its listing describes capturing meetings and calls, transcription in 112+ languages, summaries and Plaud Agent, synced through Plaud's cloud.
Pick it if you want a separate device, especially for phone calls. Skip it if you'd rather not buy, charge and carry another gadget. We compare Plaud, Pocket and Soundcore Work against a phone in AI recorder devices vs apps.
Comparison table

| Plaud | Device + apps | Not stated | Yes (per Plaud) | Yes | Required |
"Not stated" means the listing doesn't say.
Which one should you use?
- You want AI search over your own audio, nothing uploaded → BlackBox on any phone. On a Pixel, Google Recorder keeps recordings on the phone unless you turn on backup.
- You want a written recap of every meeting → Otter or Granola.
- You want a separate gadget → Plaud, Pocket or Soundcore Work; read devices vs apps first.
- You're on a recent iPhone and record occasionally → Voice Memos.
Before you record other people, check the consent rules that apply to you: is it legal to record audio? For how much each AI feature exposes, see AI note-taker privacy.

The bottom line
An AI voice recorder doesn't need to be a pendant, and it doesn't need to be a cloud service. If you want summaries written for you, choose a cloud app and accept the trade. If what you want is to record without thinking about it and then search what was said, on-device transcription with speaker labels covers it. That's what BlackBox does, on iPhone and Android, with nothing leaving your phone.
Frequently asked questions
What does an AI voice recorder app actually do?
Usually some mix of three things: transcription (speech to text), speaker labels (who said what), and summaries or chat over the transcript. Transcription and speaker labels can run on the phone. Summaries and chat almost always run on a company's servers.
Does BlackBox write AI summaries?
No. BlackBox records in the background, transcribes on-device and labels speakers, but it does not write summaries, action items or answer questions about your recordings. If you need those, Otter, Granola or Plaud are built for it.
Is there an AI voice recorder that works offline?
Yes, for transcription. BlackBox transcribes on the device, and Apple Voice Memos transcription is built into iOS on iPhone 12 and later. Cloud features such as Otter's summaries need an internet connection.
Do I need a Plaud or another AI recorder device?
Only if you need what a device does better: capturing phone calls through the handset, or recording while your phone stays free or out of reach. For in-person conversations, a phone app records and transcribes the same audio. See our device-vs-app comparison.
