One download, and it isn’t your audio

Why the threshold is not a guess

A fixed threshold like −50 dB is wrong for most files: it is far too aggressive for a quiet room recording and far too gentle for a phone in a café. Because your whole file is already decoded here, the page can read its actual noise floor and its actual speech level, and put the line between them. You can still set it by hand.

Setting a keep-back of a third of a second turns each dead patch into a natural beat instead of a splice. For cutting genuine dead air from the start and end of a recording, deleting outright is still the right call, and that is handled separately.

You see the cuts before they happen

Every detected pause is drawn on the waveform, counted, and totalled in seconds, before anything is encoded. If the threshold caught someone speaking quietly you will see it as a marker sitting over a visible lump in the waveform, and you can back it off. No other order makes sense for a destructive edit.

How do I remove silence from an audio file?+

How does it decide what counts as silence?+

By reading your recording rather than applying a fixed number. It takes the level your file spends its quietest moments at, the level it spends its loudest at, and puts the threshold above the first and well below the second. You can override it with a fixed value if you prefer.

Will it cut out quiet speech by mistake?+

It can, if someone is speaking barely above the room noise. That is exactly why every pause it found is drawn on the waveform before anything is removed — a marker sitting on top of a visible bump is the sign to lower the threshold and look again.

Should I delete pauses or shorten them?+

Shorten them, for anything with a person talking in it. Removing every gap makes speech sound relentless and unnatural. Keeping about a third of a second of each pause preserves the rhythm while still cutting most of the dead air. Deleting outright suits dead air at the start and end.

Can it remove background noise or hum too?+

No, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. This finds and cuts quiet stretches. A steady hum or hiss sits above the threshold the whole time, so it is never detected as silence — and this tool has no noise reduction in it.

How much time will I actually save?+

The page tells you before you commit: how many pauses it found, how many seconds it would remove, and how long the finished file will be. Recordings of meetings and lectures commonly shrink by 10–30%.
