If you searched for a "BlackBox call recorder", you've landed on the site for BlackBox, the 24/7 background voice recorder for iPhone and Android. Before you download anything, here's the honest answer: BlackBox doesn't record phone calls. It records the room around your phone. That difference matters, so this page explains what BlackBox captures, what actually records calls today, and the consent rules for both.

Quick answer. BlackBox records what your microphone hears — meetings, lectures, conversations in the room, your whole day — in the background, on a schedule or 24/7, and keeps it on your phone. For phone calls, use iPhone's built-in Call Recording (iOS 18.1+) or your Android dialer's recorder where it exists. For WhatsApp calls, see how to record WhatsApp calls.

What BlackBox records

  • Your surroundings, continuously or on a schedule. Start it and lock the phone; it keeps recording in the background, split into hourly files you can scrub on a timeline.
  • Scheduled windows. Weekday and weekend schedules start and stop recording without you touching the phone — see scheduled recording.
  • On-device transcription. Turn the day into searchable text without uploading audio.
  • Private by default. Recording and transcription run on your phone; audio isn't sent to BlackBox servers.

Why it can't record the call itself

Phone and VoIP calls take priority on the microphone while they're active: iOS and Android hand the input to the call, and other apps' recordings pause or go silent until it ends. Neither OS gives ordinary apps access to the call's audio stream. Android lists a voice-call audio source for system use, but third-party recorders can't rely on it. That's why apps promising to "record any call" so often stop working after an OS update — and why we don't make that claim.

When a call arrives while BlackBox is recording, capture is interrupted for the length of the call; the details are in iPhone recording stops during a call.

What actually records calls today

Regular call on iPhoneBuilt-in Call Recording in the Phone app (iOS 18.1+, where available). Everyone hears an announcement, and the recording and transcript land in Notes.
Regular call on AndroidYour phone maker's dialer, if it offers recording in your region.

Not the older "Blackbox call recorder" app

An unrelated Android app called "Blackbox call recorder", from a different developer, still shows up on third-party APK download sites. It isn't BlackBox and isn't connected to us. BlackBox is published by Life Like on the App Store and Google Play. If you install from anywhere else, you aren't getting our app.

Recording a call or a conversation without the consent the law requires can be illegal, and it can make the recording useless. Some places need only one participant's consent; others need everyone's. Check the rules where you and the other people are — start with is it legal to record audio or the recording laws by location.

The bottom line

If you need a call recorder, BlackBox isn't it — and we'd rather say so than have you find out after installing. If you need a recorder that captures your day, meetings or lectures in the background, privately and on a schedule, that's exactly what BlackBox is built for.

Frequently asked questions

Is BlackBox a call recorder?

No. BlackBox is a background voice recorder: it records what your phone's microphone hears — a meeting, a lecture, your day — on a schedule or around the clock. It does not tap into the phone line or VoIP call audio, and while a call holds the microphone, other recordings on the phone pause or go silent until it ends.

Is the old "Blackbox call recorder" Android app the same as BlackBox?

No. A separate Android app with a similar name, made by a different developer, has been listed on third-party APK sites for years. BlackBox — the 24/7 voice recorder on this site — is made by Life Like and is available on the App Store and Google Play.

How can I record a phone call, then?

On iPhone, iOS 18.1 and later include Call Recording in the Phone app, where available; everyone on the call hears an announcement. On Android, some phone makers' dialers include call recording in some regions. For WhatsApp and other VoIP calls, the dependable method is speakerphone plus a recorder on a second device.
